1.A. EZRA KELLER – Born 1814. Died 1848.In 1845 when Wittenberg was chartered, became first president. Section E.

2.A. JOHN DICK – Born 1834.Died 1906. Fall of 1863 arrived in Springfield to take charge of laying out the grounds of Ferncliff Cemetery. Held position of superintendent and landscape gardener for 43 years allowing Ferncliff to become known as one of the most beautiful places in Ohio. Section B.

3.A. JONATHAN (MULHOLLAND) MILHOLLIN – Born 1765. Died ca 1834. Revolutionary War veteran. Section D.

4.A. SULLY JAYMES – Born 1880. Died 1950. Local attorney who became Grand Chancellor of Ohio in 1934. One of the first members of the Board of Directors of the Center Street YMCA. Section Z.

5.A. WILLIAM WERDEN – Born 1785. Died 1869. Opened the National Hotel, later known as “The Werden House.” Section E.

6.A. MAX L. KLEEMAN – Born about 1867. Died 1940. Opened the People’s Outfitting Company and remained president until his death. Section G.

7.A. DAVID ORRIN STEINBERGER – Born 1857. Died 1945. Artist who became known as the “man who lived in a tree,” or more familiarly as the “Hermit of Mad River.” Section H.

8.A. JAMES LEFFEL – Born 1806. Died 1866. Recognized as the first inventor of Clark County and found of its metal industries. Section E.

9.A. DR LINUS ELI RUSSELL – Born 1848. Died 1917. Medical doctor and lawyer who contributed much literature to the medical profession. Became known as one of the most learned men of his profession. Section O.

10.A. HARRY A. TOULMIN – Born about 1855. Died 1942. Patent lawyer who helped Orville and Wilbur Wright gain and protect several patents. Section C.

11.A. WILLIAM H. BLEE – Born about 1845. Died 1917. City councilman. Through his initiative obtained the first large truck for the local fire department. Section O.

12.A. ROBERT LAYNE – Born 1758. Died 1845. Served in the American Revolution. Section L.

13.A. JOHN S. CROMWELL – Born 1850. Died 1921. Journalist and businessman who established the “Farm and Fireside” journal. Publishing firm later became known as Crowell-Collier. Section I.

14.A. BROADWELL CHINN – Born about 1855. Died 1889. First African American to graduate from Springfield High School, Wittenberg University and become a member of the Clark County Bar Association. Section F.

15.A. DAVID LOWRY – Born 1767. Died 1858. Settled in Bethel Township where he took up farming and building and running grist mills. Section D.

16.A. PAUL U. & ELIZABETH DEER – Paul was born 1897. Died 1984. Elizabeth was born 1898. Died 1995. Mr Deer started the Bonded Oil Company in 1932. Honored for 50 years in the oil industry in 1971. Elected to the Oil Hall of Fame in 1967. Section O.

17.A. GENERAL SAMSON MASON – Born 1793. Died 1869. War of 1812 veteran. Lawyer who in 1823 was elected to the lower house of the Ohio Legislature, and later served in the Senate. United States District Attorney for Ohio during the Millard Fillmore administration. Section C.

18.A. WILLIAM BAYLEY – Born 1845. Died 1934. Businessman who became one of the first board members of the city park commissioners. He designed and erected many bridges in Springfield and Clark County. Section C.

19.A. CAPTAIN WILLIAM ADDISON STEWART – Born 1809. Died 1869. River Pilot who later served in the Black Hawk War. Appointed Chief of Police in Springfield on October 14, 1867, only later to resign from office and refuse to accept any remuneration for services rendered. Section D.

20.A. JAMES GARFIELD STEWART – Born 1880. Died 1959. Lawyer who was named to the State Supreme Court in 1947. Section D.
