Eliza Daniels Stewart, also known as "Mother Stewart." was one of the most well-known leaders of the temperance movement (which opposed the consumption of alcohol).

 

Eliza was one of the original members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and led the Women's Whiskey War." She was a great crusader for the cause, even traveling internationally to promote it, and her speaking was known to draw large crowds to demonstrations and parades.

 

Eliza is also reportedly the first woman to ever hold the position of Assistant to the Springfield Postmaster, under the administration of General Jackson.

 

Mother Stewart died in 1908 and is buried in section L of Ferncliff Cemetery.
