Michael H. Chakeres: 1912 - 2002
Michael H. Chakeres was born October 4, 1912, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Vasiliki and Harry Chakeres. Michael was a graduate of Springfield High School and Wittenberg University.
His career started as a young lad serving popcorn to the patrons at the Chakeres Theaters. The family's business was founded in1911 and operated more than 90 screens around southwest Ohio at the height of its success.
During World War II, Michael served three years as Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Air Force. When he returned home he continued in the family business and succeeded his father in 1955 as President and Chairman of the Board of Chakeres Theatres and Lobby Shoppes, Inc.
Michael and his wife, Pauline Dombalis Chakeres, and their children were devout members of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield where Michael was President of the Council.
He served on the Board of Directors of Springfield Key Bank, Community Hospital, Wittenberg University, the Springfield Foundation, the Foundation of Motion Picture Pioneers and many other organizations. Michael was an active member of the Rotary Club, University Club, Van Dyke Club, and several community organizations.
Michael devoted his life to many philanthropic causes and strove to make a difference in healthcare, education and the arts. He died peacefully in his home on Dec. 7, 2002.
