FAMOUS FOLKS AT FERNCLIFF
Daniel Hertzler: 1800 - 1867
Daniel Hertzler moved to Clark County from Pennsylvania in 1834. Over the next 20 years, he made his money operating a saw mill, grist mill, and distillery, known collectively as the Hertzler Mills located on Mad River. In 1855 he established the Old Clark County Bank, said to have been the first private bank in Clark County.
In 1867, the Hertzler family was awakened by a gang of robbers in the home. During a fight, Daniel was shot and killed. Four persons were arrested for the crime - two were acquitted and two others escaped from an open door to the jail, and never re-captured.
Today, the Hertzler House is a museum located in George Rogers Clark Park, giving visitors a glimpse into life during the 1800s.
Daniel Hertzler is interred in the Hertzler Family burial plot in Section L.
