What is different about green burial vs. traditional burial?

The main differences you will see with green burial is that all materials used are to facilitate natural decomposition. That means no embalming and no vault placed over the body. Natural materials are used during the burial process. 

Can I still have a casket?

Shrouds or biodegradable caskets are permissible for burial in Terra Meadow. Your funeral home can direct you on casket options, which are typically made of untreated wood, seagrass or other natural materials.

Do I have to choose a funeral home that supports green burial?

Yes, you will need to speak with your chosen funeral home to ensure their practices are acceptable for natural burial. Ferncliff’s team can coordinate with your funeral home to discuss details such as forgoing embalming and choosing natural casket materials. 

Can I have a viewing if I choose natural burial?

Viewings before natural burial vary by funeral home. Having a viewing isn’t ruled out when green burial is chosen, but some funeral homes do not offer open caskets without embalming. Non-formaldehyde embalming fluids may also be available at your funeral home, which would make natural burial possible. 

Can I have a natural burial in Terra Meadow if I choose to be cremated?

Yes. Those choosing cremations can opt for Terra Meadow as their final resting place. There will also be a nearby wooded pathway for scattering of ashes as well. 

How will burial plots be marked in Terra Meadow?

Terra Meadow will be mapped so visitors can easily find their loved ones. We will also have a cenotaph wall with benches and the names of those interred inscribed on them. 

Can I choose green burial if I’ve already purchased a plot in another section at Ferncliff?

Yes. Ferncliff is happy to discuss options with you to provide a natural burial in any location on the property, or discuss trading in your space for a natural burial space. 

When will plots be available in Terra Meadow?

Ferncliff Cemetery expects construction to be complete in the fall of 2026.
