Wildflowers You’ll Find at Ferncliff

Among the 218 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, stunning trees and thoughtful memorials at Ferncliff Cemetery & Arboretum you’ll find striking pops of color in the spring: wildflowers.

Wildflowers pop up all over Ferncliff, but in the dedicated wildflower field and wherever they please, as wildflowers tend to do. The wildflowers at Ferncliff add to our biodiversity, making Ferncliff a desirable home to birds, butterflies and other wildlife!

We see most of our wildflowers between the end of March and through early June. Take a look for some of these blooming beauties next time you visit Ferncliff.

The Wildflower Field

Located next to Whispering Haven Pet Cemetery at Ferncliff, the wildflower field is a sight to behold! We have made a home for hundreds of native midwest wildflowers, which include:

  • Cornflowers
  • Daisies
  • Lance Leaf Coreopsis
  • Poppies
  • Purple Musk Thistle
  • Red Clover

Our friends at NatureShots captured some amazing moments in the wildflower field in 2025, featuring many of the flowers mentioned above along with a variety of pollinators!

Check out their video to see Orange Sulphur Butterflies, a Widow Skimmer Dragonfly, a Cabbage White Butterfly, a Monarch Butterfly, a Silver-Spotted Skipper, a Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, a Black Swallowtail Butterfly, a Common Checkered Skipper, bees and birds enjoying Ferncliff’s wildflower field!

Wildflowers Don’t Care Where They Grow

Dolly Parton once sang that “When a flower grows wild, it can always survive. Wildflowers don't care where they grow.” We love that sentiment, and are delighted to see where wildflowers pop up across our grounds.

Keep an eye out for wildflowers on your next walk, or venture over near the Widow’s Walk, Weeping Rock or the waterfall to see if you can spot:

  • Bishop’s Cap
  • Bluebells
  • Butterweed
  • Cut-Leaved Toothwort
  • Dog Violet
  • Dutchman's Breeches
  • Ground Ivy
  • Lesser Celandine
  • Lesser Periwinkle
  • Spring Beauty
  • Striped-cream Violet
  • Trillium
  • Wild Tulip
  • Woodland Stonecrop

Make the most of your trip to Ferncliff Cemetery & Arboretum in Springfield, and plan your visit here!
