The Bushnell Mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery

8:00 A.M. – Start Your Adventure at Ferncliff Cemetery and Arboretum

  • Ferncliff Cemetery and Arboretum opens its gates bright and early at 7:30 a.m., giving you a perfect, early morning start to enjoy the morning sun, birdsong, and a bit of reflection and relaxation. Depending on when you wrap up your fun-filled day in Springfield, in the summer, you can return until 7 p.m.
  • Next – begin your self-guided tour! Choose from the Tree Tour, an Athletes & Entertainers Tour, or a Veterans Tour (and that’s just to start). 
  • Don’t miss the GAR Mound and the U.S. Colored Troops Monument, both of which offer powerful insights into local Civil War history. 
  • Wander to notable mausoleums, each with its own story etched in stone. 
  • Don’t forget to utilize the Tree Guide as you explore the grounds to help you fully enjoy the many tree species represented.
  • Plan: 3.5-4 hours

12:00 P.M. – Head to Downtown Springfield for Lunch

  • Springfield’s downtown offers a variety of incredible lunch spots. For native residents, the resurgence of downtown is encouraging and refreshing. For visitors to our area, it’s an opportunity to sample just a little bit of the flavor of Springfield! Consider stopping in and giving one or two of the following a try:
    • Un Mundo Café: Perfect for fresh, locally sourced options, including soups, salads, and sandwiches.
    • Charlo’s Provisions & Eatery: Fresh, American Heritage style cuisine and market with locally sourced goods.
    • Winans Chocolates + Coffees: A quick stop for delicious chocolates and amazing coffee.
    • Salato Deli: An Italian deli with outstanding sandwiches. 
  • Plan: 1.5 hours

The Heritage Center Museum at City Hall

1:30 P.M. – Explore the Heritage Center Museum

  • Located in the beautifully restored City Hall building, the Heritage Center Museum is a must-visit for history buffs and curious minds alike. The museum explores Springfield’s rich industrial history, is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated!
  • Pro-tip: If you’re interested in going deeper and connecting the lives of some of the notable figures you learned about at Ferncliff Cemetery and Arboretum, you’ll need to make an appointment in advance for the Library Archives (located in the same building as the museum!).
  • Plan: 1.5 hours

3:00 P.M. – Discover More Downtown Springfield Gems

  • After immersing yourself in history, explore some of Springfield’s unique attractions, all within walking or a short drive distance:
    • Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House: This architectural masterpiece is a short drive from downtown but worth every minute.
    • Art Murals: Take a leisurely stroll to spot colorful and creative murals that tell Springfield’s story through art.
    • Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop: Treat the whole family to old-fashioned sweets, novelty items, and soda flavors you didn’t know existed.
    • The Pennsylvania House Museum: If you’re fascinated by early American life, this historical inn offers an intimate glimpse into 19th-century living.
    • The Birthplace of 4-H: Pay homage to one of the country’s most impactful youth organizations.
  • Time Needed: 2-4 hours

5:00 P.M. – Relax and Recharge

  • Take a short break at Hatch Artist Studios or Mother Stewart’s Brewing Co. (kid-friendly with board games and outdoor seating). These spots are great for unwinding before dinner.
